My practice combines the skills of conventional internal medicine
--medical reasoning, diagnostics, treatments and referrals -- with
those of complementary/alternative medical methods. In doing so,
my goal is to provide the most comprehensive and effective medical
care today. This type of medicine is known as "integrative medicine".
I am board certified in internal medicine (1989) and have maintained
a practice in internal medicine and integrated medicine in Atlanta
since 1993 (see ABOUT
THE DOCTOR).
My practice is founded on the philosophy of attending to the
whole person - body, mind and spirit (see
ABOUT THE PRACTICE and
PHILOSOPHY). This is
based on the fact that each of us experiences health and illness
in very unique ways and that each of us is a unique being with great
individuality in our responses to our environment. Simply put, no
two of us are alike (even if we have the same illness).
It follows that no two treatments should be completely alike
either. For any treatment to be really successful (significantly
improve or cure the condition), that treatment must take into account
the uniqueness of the individual and must be planned and executed
in the contexts, individual settings and conditions of our lives
as they really are, with the stresses we are under and with the
sensitivities we have.
I see patients for both regular internal medicine evaluations
and apply or integrate complementary methods depending on your individual
needs.
I evaluate you using combined conventional and complementary
methods of diagnosis and design an individualized therapy, which
may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, classical homeopathy,
nutritional supplements, bioidentical hormones, diet, exercise and
other lifestyle changes, flower essences, stress management techniques,
meditation arts (tai chi, qigong) and other methods.
This is done along with any necessary conventional medical therapies
needed (or those you may already be on) and with the treatments
of other practitioners whose care you may be under.
I also use a series of more creative scientific testing methods
designed to probe more deeply into potential roots or causes of
your condition and into the functional status of various body systems
(digestive, hormonal, immune, biochemical, antioxidant) (see
A NOTE ON TESTING).
This has allowed more effective treatment and resolution of problems.
The changes in medical practice over the past decade have been
accompanied by a dramatic increase in the interest in and use of
complementary/alternative healing methods by millions of people.
There has also been increased research into them by universities,
governmental and scientific organizations. This movement and practice
has increased our potential capabilities to explore the nature of
our symptoms and illnesses and more effectively diagnose and treat
more of the ills that affect us (see
CONDITIONS TREATED) which
conventional medical systems may not be able to address or treat.
Such changes naturally allow for greater participation by you,
the patient, in your healthcare decisions and choices and, therefore,
allow for the strengthening of the core of our healthcare system
- the doctor-patient relationship (see
PUBLICATIONS AND ARTICLES).
